Larraine Segil, Chair and CEO of the Exceptional Women Awardees Foundation (EWA), has built an incredible career as a successful serial entrepreneur, board member, and author, but she often wonders what that career might have looked like had she had a mentor to turn to.

It is clear from the work of LSS’  non-profit organization, Exceptional Women Awardees Foundation (EWA),  that she is in the mentoring game for a more honorable purpose (see below) and for keeps.

Both the startup course and the LSS program offer unique ways for alumni to contribute to the future success of Southwestern graduates.

The course also addresses certain legal issues surrounding the needs of entrepreneurs, such as ownership and fiduciary responsibility, as well as various pertinent agreements, and provides a lawyer’s understanding of financial projects and representations for a start-up.

Larraine Segil Scholars

Professor Segil’s pay it forward mentality began when she noticed a gender gap and lack of resources for women in law school. Her dream of providing the guidance and coaching she never had has come true. Many times over.

Professor Segil and some of her mentees were featured in a recent Forbes.com article. The Larraine D. Segil Award for Strategic Alliance Competency was established by Southwestern Law School alumna, Larraine D. Segil, as an annual award to recognize an outstanding female JD or LLM student, working in the for-profit business/law sector, showing competency or potential competency in forming strategic business alliances and a commitment to mentoring other women as well as a willingness to be mentored themselves.

The ideal Larraine Segil Scholar must:

  • Walk the road less traveled
  • Be a good student (not necessarily at the very top of the class)
  • Be a woman of integrity
  • Have an interest in partnering and alliances
  • Be willing to be mentored by Larraine for the rest of her life and by the other Larraine Segil Scholars thereafter, and to pay it forward to mentor the other women in the group for the rest of their lives
  • Commit to attend quarterly meetings and all LSS events for two years

This award provides invaluable training, mentoring, and opportunity.  To find out how you can get involved send Ms. Segil an email

Paradigm For Parity https://www.lsegil.com/638_paradigm_parity/ https://www.lsegil.com/638_paradigm_parity/#respond Sat, 02 Apr 2016 01:39:01 +0000 https://usr.vdj.temporary.site/website_89700c1c/?p=638 On March 23rd 2016 Larraine presented the Keynote address for Broads Circle’s program titled ” The Chief Lawyer and The Corporate Board”. She spoke about the need for courage on the part of the Chief Lawyer in protecting the Board as well as the CEO sometimes from themselves as well as the evolution of Chief Lawyer into leader, manager and team player – leader of the legal team as well as outside counsel, manager of the talent (fast to fire and slow to hire) sometimes globally, and advisor and facilitator of the peer senior leadership team.

She also spoke about the Paradigm for Parity movement towards gender parity in pay and position and how 3 women on a board cause the issue of gender to disappear -that is, all board members play important roles and a board with almost or equal gender parity causes the gender issue to be a non issue.
